More than 70 people attended the 'Bowling Balls' men's health event on Friday 21 June at Trinity Church, where attendees and their caregivers learnt about the importance of cancer awareness and screening in a fun and relaxing environment.
The event was specially designed for men living with a learning disability, autism or neurodiversity.
Maura Ireland, Community Provision's Manager, Hounslow Council, said:
"Bowling Balls created a safe space where we discussed the early signs of cancer, why it’s important to check regularly, the importance of early screening and who men can talk to regarding any health concerns, in a relaxing environment.
"The event also enabled men to ask direct questions to professionals, as they felt at ease in their surroundings whilst they were enjoying all the activities. Conversations then could be easily had about the best means to support them through the health system.
"This type of event was very accessible, informative and fun, which allowed people to talk without judgement and ask some really sensitive questions. Feedback has already highlighted that more focused events on men’s health and wellbeing would be beneficial to the community."
The event was designed and delivered by Hounslow Council, Imperial College Healthcare and Hounslow & Richmond Community Healthcare.
The service is already busy planning their next event, 'Boobs and Bingo' on the 4 October which will be aimed specifically at vulnerable woman in Hounslow.
It will cover all aspects of breast care awareness and cervical screening. If you would like to get involved please email Community.
