Collaborating with South Asian communities to increase residents' confidence in preventive health services

To help increase the uptake of preventative health services from Hounslow residents who do not speak English as their first language, targeted health engagement was delivered in collaboration with places of worship over the last three weeks. These included:

  • Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Hounslow
  • Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara

Gurdwara 2.jpgThe NWL Involvement lead delivered this activity in conjunction with:

  • The Hounslow Health Outreach Team
  • PCN representatives
  • Immunisation co-ordinator
  • Mental health colleagues
  • Teams from Chelwest and Imperial Health Care.

Health Engagement at each event focused on:

  • Information on breast and cervical screening, supported by conversation and myth busting with a GP and a practice nurse
  • Breast screening appointments within 2 weeks
  • Information on South Asian support groups for breast cancer survivors
  • Vaccination and immunisation information
  • Blood pressure checks
  • Balance Tests and referrals to the West London Falls Prevention & Bone Health Service if needed.

Discussions were provided in Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Bengali and English.

More than 300 residents engaged in conversations. The programme received positive feedback from faith centres, residents and clinicians. The next visit is booked for 25 April at the:

Jamia Mosque and Islamic Centre

NHS NWL will now deliver this programme of activity every two months at each faith setting. If your team would like to discuss engagement opportunities, please email Sreeparna Roy - s.roy10@nhs.net
