 In collaboration with health, voluntary and community partners the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership aims to deliver Health in the Park, a fun and interactive health and wellbeing engagement event for all residents.

The event is designed to motivate visitors to become more active and lead healthier lifestyles, so that they are not impacted by long term health conditions.

More than 30 groups are collaborating to deliver this FREE event for residents by hosting either an information stand or delivering a healthy activity. Main supporters include Healthy Hounslow and Brent Community FC.

The event is scheduled for Saturday 15 June, Lampton Park, Hounslow.

West London NHS Trust marked Mental Health Awareness Week in May with a schedule of activities, opening the awareness campaign with the launch of a new perinatal service in collaboration with SHOUT and the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The new project offers free, confidential 24/7 text support service to pregnant women / birthing people, and new parents living in the boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow and Hammersmith and Fulham, who are experiencing mental health problems. The launch event was hosted at Hounslow House, and the event has so far garnered media coverage across broadcast and online channels. Read the full story on their website.

The Forensic Services (WLFS) Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) hosted a number of workshops to encourage service users to move more for their mental health. Some of these included, cycling, Tai Chi, a physiotherapy exercise group, and Nordic walking.

West London's cycling volunteers Adrian Camm and Marion Arundel held a lunchtime cycling event from 12 to 1pm on Thursday 16 May at St Bernard's Hospital. Anyone who completed the circuit was offered a complimentary meal at Café on the Hill. 

West London’s 16 to 25 Mental health integrated network team (MINT) colleagues visited Houses of Parliament to take part in a round table discussion on mental health with our community partner, QPR in the Community Trust and other delegates at the Houses of Parliament.

The Trust’s CAMHS Youth Ambassadors lined up a busy wellbeing schedule for CAMHS staff across the Tri-borough, with each day of the week offering a wellbeing themed activity and top tips for looking after one’s mental and physical health. The activity of the week was the ‘Heart of Hounslow to Paris’ challenge, asking staff to cover a distance of 234 miles by walking, running, or cycling. 

West London led on the dissemination of campaign assets to all BBP partners. Partners supported by sharing assets and events across their digital and social channels. 

As part of Hounslow Councils EDI Strategy, The Hounslow Public Health Team are leading a morning of community outreach (Wednesday 22 May) at seven locations across Hounslow to celebrate the International Day of Action for Women’s Health (28 May).

The team are aiming to recruit staff volunteers from across the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership (BBP) to help deliver in-person street-based community outreach. By having a broad range of colleagues to support, they hope to engage with as many women as possible across the borough, so that through discussions with them, health and care colleagues can better understand women’s life and health experiences; gather their views and they can highlight their concerns with any access issues with women health services in Hounslow.

This key community outreach will help Hounslow Council and local NHS Trusts take action to improve local health services to meet women’s needs.

  • Public Event

Public Health colleagues will also host an engagement event for members of the public on the same day at Trinity church, where the event aims to showcase some of the challenges women face around their health and use all feedback to help shape the first local Hounslow Women’s Health Strategy that will help influence future women’s health services. The event will also host 10-15 health and community stalls.

  • To design campaign assets and provide internal communications to BBP colleagues from Wednesday 24 April, launching at the BBP Huddle that support the recruitment of volunteers for community outreach project.
  • To design external assets and launch an external promotional campaign that aims to promote ticket sales for the women's health event on Wednesday 22 May. Campaign launched week commencing 29 April.

Dementia Action Week is annual national event organised by the Alzheimer’s Society, running from 13-19 May. The event aims to raise awareness about the condition and to provide people with information, support and guidance on a range of issues surrounding dementia.

Background

There are over 2300 people living with dementia in Hounslow, and the borough has the second highest emergency hospital admissions rate for people living with dementia in London. This has led to an increased demand on hospitals, and on residential and nursing care. Also, for the last 5.5 years a substantial number of people have consistently remained undiagnosed in Hounslow.

Objectives

  1. Increase awareness about this long-term health condition by signposting residents to the following webpages:
  2. Signpost residents impacted by this long-term health condition to the variety of engagement activities on offer during Dementia Action week 

Delivery

Working alongside partners including The Alzheimer’s Society, Hounslow Council led this campaign by promoting a host of awareness-raising events and activities in the borough. The week launched with the 'Living Well with Dementia', an event at Syon House on Monday, 13 May for anyone affected by dementia – including family and carers. There was dementia friendly games, wellbeing therapies, workshops and more. The remainder of the week then consisted of daily localised events throughout Hounslow. 

A social media plan and comms messaging were disseminated to all BBP partners with aim of encouraging daily support during the awareness week.

Free Health Support Event for Carers

Carers are invited on Thursday 7 March from 10.30am - 1pm at Southville Community Centre, Southville Rd, Feltham TW14 8AP to learn about the best ways to manage their own health and to prevent cardiovascular disease.

This is a great opportunity to discuss health queries or blood pressure concerns with our Health Outreach Team, who will also be offering free blood pressure checks, C02 and BMI checks on the day.

Key speakers on the day aim to:

  • Provide carers with an increased understanding on the importance of cardiovascular health.
  • Highlight health and care services that are available to carers.
  • Provide advice on any barriers that may be impacting carers from accessing the full range of health and support services, and ways to overcome them.

Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 (5-11 February) is a BBP campaign priority in the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership (BBP) Communications and Engagement strategy 2023-24.

The theme for this year is ‘My voice matters’ which focuses on empowering children and young people to share their mental health experiences.

To highlight World COPD Day (15 November) the Hounslow Borough Respiratory Support Group (HBRSG) are hosting a FREE health and care event on Saturday 18 November, St Johns Community Centre, St Johns Road, Isleworth, TW7 6RU from 10.30am – 3.30pm.

This event was open to all residents and families living in Hounslow who are impacted by any long-term health conditions, such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma, dementia etc. 

The day was delivered with the support of local NHS health partners and Hounslow Council to create awareness of health and care services available to residents in the borough. 

Objectives

  • To support the HRSG in generating awareness of their event amongst colleagues and residents. 
  • Generate a 20% increase on 2022 event attendance levels (approx. 80 attendees 2022).  
  • Support HRSG in generating attendance for guest speakers.

#AskAboutAsthma returns for its seventh year, led by the NHS England – London Babies, Children and Young People’s Transformation team. The #AskAboutAsthma campaign is about making simple changes to children and young people’s care that will make a big difference to how they experience their asthma.

The campaign takes place this year from 11-17 September 2023.

BBP Strategic approach

To support this national campaign but tailor for the local landscape and develop a campaign with the following BBP partners: HRCH, Hounslow Council and North West London. Plus, work alongside the Hounslow Respiratory Group.

Work with local clinicians, Hounslow parents, schools, and partners to achieve greater campaign engagement.

To commence the campaign adopted a drip feed approach from the beginning of August 2023 and built up momentum to a full launch on the 11 September. 

Communications Objectives

The #AskAboutAsthma campaign encourages children and young people, their families, and those involved in their care to follow simple steps to help them control their asthma, BBP aims to achieve this with the following:

Those included Singing for the Brain sessions, sensory outdoor walks, marketplace events and intergenerational music workshops - all aimed at people living with dementia and their carers. There were also a series of information stands across the borough. 

Hounslow Council also premiered Glimpses, which tells the story of a Hounslow mother and son who are faced with the challenges of dementia following diagnosis.

A social media plan and comms messaging were disseminated to all BBP partners with aim of encouraging daily support during the awareness week.

The London Borough of Hounslow is delivered the local campaign to target adults aged 18+ who don’t traditionally visit their GP and therefore may be unaware of a high blood pressure.

This year's Mental Health Awareness Week ran from 15 to 21 May and the theme was 'anxiety’.

Background

Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem.

Lots of things can lead to feelings of anxiety, including exam pressures, relationships, starting a new job (or losing one) or other big life events. People can also get anxious when it comes to things to do with money and not being able to meet our basic needs, like heating their home or buying food.

The Mental Health Foundation provided a range of helpful resources and downloadable assets

Objectives

  • To increase residents’ and BBP colleagues’ awareness and understanding of anxiety by providing information on the things that can help prevent it from becoming a problem. 
  • Provide residents and colleagues with accurate signposting to support services in Hounslow. 
  • Highlight the new partnership between West London NHS Trust’s Wellbeing & Recovery College and Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust (launched 16 May 2023). 

To help deliver the above objectives, the following mental health services were available for promotion in Hounslow:

  • Good Thinking is an online service that helps Londoners look after their mental health and wellbeing in a way that works for them. It provides a range of helpful digital resources and translated content.
  • Safe Space is a local Hounslow hub for anyone aged 18 and over who feels they are nearing crisis point. You will be greeted by a friendly staff member who will be there to listen to you and help you get the support you need. 
  • The Circle is a hub space and café that offers support for Hounslow children and young people aged 5-18 who are in active mental distress. Young people can visit for advice, support, or just to talk, with drop-in or appointment-based services.  
  • Wellbeing & Recovery College is a training and resource centre which develops and delivers education and tools to support wellbeing and the self-management of mental health difficulties.  They offer a wide range of courses to those using the Trust’s mental health services. 
  • IAPT Hounslow (westlondon.nhs.uk) – A talking therapies service that supports people struggling with anxiety. 
  • West London mental health crisis helpline - Freephone 0800 328 4444 mental health helpline :: West London NHS Trust
  • One Hounslow Connect provides a more comprehensive list of mental health services across the borough.

Organisations could support this BBP campaign by:

Cervical Cancer Prevention Week is listed as a BBP partnership campaign priority in the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership (BBP) Comms and Engagement strategy 2022-23. To support delivery of the campaign the Hounslow Public Health team created a digital content plan spanning seven days to help drive awareness and engagement amongst residents about the ease, and importance of booking a cervical screening.

The campaign predominantly focused on social media static and animated graphics, and all links signposted viewers to either https://www.jostrust.org.uk/ or https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/cervical-screening/

  • Public Health colleagues are working directly with beauty and nail businesses within the borough to raise awareness with their customers on the issue. This is an on-going engagement project and will be live during 2023.

The campaign was promoted via on-the-ground engagement and digital communications. The Health Outreach Team engaged with residents at various locations across the borough, distributing flyers with a QR code that linked to a webpage with details of the campaign. The digital campaign included social media, a news story with case studies, and a poster shared on JC Decaux boards.

Children’s mental health awareness week 2023 was listed as a partnership campaign priority in the Hounslow Borough Based Partnership (BBP) Comms and Engagement strategy 2022-23. This year’s theme was Let’s Connect and ran from 6-12 February. The national campaign aimed to encourage children and adults to consider how they can make meaningful connections that support their mental health.
