Improving planned care and reducing NHS waiting times
The NHS is working to improve planned care, which includes non-emergency hospital appointments and planned surgeries. The aim is to ensure patients receive specialist care within 18 weeks of referral while making the process fairer and more efficient.
To achieve this, we need to understand the changing needs of local people, rising demand for services, and how to address differences in waiting times and experiences across different communities.
Residents and healthcare professionals have already suggested ways to improve waiting times and care, including:
- allowing GPs to get quicker advice from specialists to avoid unnecessary hospital appointments
- providing patients with regular updates on their place in the waiting list
- giving patients more choice in selecting appointment times
- offering better support to help people stay well while waiting for treatment
- using technology to improve efficiency and free up time for specialists
We want to hear your experiences and ideas on how these changes could work in practice.
